I needed to remove a applet from a gnome panel called "windown list". I was annoying and I could not remove it by right clicking on it.

set gnome panel to defaults

gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel 
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel
