to get a console on a VM. ESXi has the ability to run a video console over VNC by adding the following to the VMX file.

remotedisplay.vnc.port=”59xx″
remotedisplay.vnc.enabled=”true”
remotedisplay.vnc.password = “pwd”

works for 3.x, 4.x, 5.x
